Grace Wright Lee

Grace "Gracie" was born in a one room log cabin outside Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She spent her first 5 years with her grandparents, aunts and uncles on a cotton farm in Okalona, Arkansas. Her childhood was hard, but the kindness and love of the family surrounding her helped develop her into the classy, refined, and gentile Southern Lady that she was. Her Aunt Dorothy taught her the essentials of being a well rounded young lady and her Uncles Woodrow and Jim were also positive influences in her early life. She was strong, independent, and the rock of the family; a friend, confidant and mother figure to many, always caring and giving. Grace was a woman of strong Christian faith, as demonstrated by her generosity to anyone that she knew to be in need. She had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling stories about herself that were often too funny to be true, but they were true. All who knew her will carry those stories with them. She always tried to have a little fun and laugh along the way. She read the obituaries every day to see if she was in there. Up until now, it was a good day. She was a well respected bookkeeper, having worked many years for Dr. Carl Passman and for Dale Exploration. She also helped Don Gardner's Motor Company in Natchez and Jeffery's Flowers in Ferriday. In return, she learned how to operate a computer and how to make flower arrangements. Many of her friends reaped the benefits of her cake baking skills. She loved reading and working crossword puzzles. She enjoyed her time in the Vidalia Women's Club and at the District Level of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She was very proud of the work they did for the community, especially the beautification project around the old courthouse and fountain in Vidalia, as well as the Guardian Shelter, a home for battered women and children, in Natchez. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester Wright and Lela Wingfield. Also predeceasing her was her "Hun" and the love of her life, her husband, Newton "Newt" Lee. She is survived by her daughter, Nelwyn Bennett (Bob "Bobby")of Broussard, LA, brother, Tom "Tommy" Williams (Martha), of Satsuma, AL, nieces Evangeline McKinney (Robert) and Catherine Myers (Vance), great-nieces Lizzie Simon and Sienna Myers, step-daughter Betty Lee, step-grand daughter LeeAnn Warren and step-great-grand daughter Chelsea Warren. Her life, love and laughter is imprinted on the hearts of all who knew her well and the memory of her will be shared among her family and friends for years to come.
